The cost of this disease to our society and our Church is monumental. It breaks the hearts of those who love the one who is addicted. It wounds the Body of Christ. In the early days of the Church, when the front door of the parish was painted red, it was said to signify sanctuary - that the ground beyond these doors was holy, and anyone who entered through them was safe from harm." The mission of St. Mary's Recovery Ministries Team is:
to provide education and resources about substance abuse, addiction, and recovery to our parish and to the community at large,
to assist in the healing of the body, mind, and spirit of individuals and families affected by addiction,
and to create an environment in which those in recovery can participate comfortably and fully in all aspects of parish life.
St. Mary's supports Recovery in several different ways. One Sunday a year, a guest speaker is invited to deliver the sermon at the 10 AM service and talk to the parishioners at coffee hour. At all Eucharists, grape juice is consecrated along with wine. AA and Al-Anon meet at the church weekly. Published materials are readily available for interested parties. Members of the congreagion have walked in the Pro-Act Recovery parade in Philadelphia.
